MEWPs – (Scissors and Boom Lifts)

MEWPs – (Scissors and Boom Lifts)Mobile Elevated Working Platforms or MEWPs include boom-supported aerial platforms such as cherry pickers, and scissors-supported platforms or scissors lifts. Cherry pickers and scissors lifts  are extremely useful machines and can be found on several types of premises from factories to sports facilities to construction sites. The relative ease of use of MEWPs often leads to a false sense of security, but they are extremely dangerous. The major causes of MEWP-related fatalities are falls, electrocutions, and collapses or tip overs.

There is a legal requirement for employers to ensure that workers who operate MEWPs are properly trained in the safe use of the equipment. It is the relatively easy operation of cherrypickers and scissors lifts that makes them so dangerous because inexperienced operators mistake their ability to use them with an ability to use them safely, and accidents with MEWPs are common. This course highlights to trainees just how dangerous the equipment is and how they can use them safely. Because of the nature of the hazards associated with these machines, training is given on both scissors lift and boom lift together, although they can be done individually.
